Walter Frederick Mondale (January 5, 1928-) was Vice President of the United States of America from 1977 to 1981 under Jimmy Carter, a U.S. Senator from Minnesota, and the Democratic nominee for president in 1984.
Early Life
Walter Mondale was born in 1928 in Ceylon, Minnesota. His father was a Methodist minister. Mondale graduated from the University of Minnesota and from the University of Minnesota Law School. He practiced law in Minnesota until his appointment as Attorney General of the state in 1960. Mondale married Joan Adams in 1955 and they have three children, Theodore, Elanor, and William.
Political Life
- Appointed Attorney General of Minnesota in May 1960,by Governor Orville L. Freeman. He was elected attorney general in November, and reelected in 1962.
- Appointed to the Senate in 1964 by Governor Karl F. Rolvaag to replace Hubert Humphrey, who was elected Vice President.
- Mondale was elected to a full term in 1966 and was reelected in 1972.
- While in the Senate, Mondale was known for being a liberal, supporting civil rights, consumer protection, education reform, and campaign finance reform. He was an opponent of the Vietnam War. As a Senator Mondale served on the Finance Committee, Labor and Public Welfare Committee, Budget Committee, and Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. He also served as Chair of the Select Committee on Equal Education Opportunity and Chair of the Intelligence Committee's Domestic Task Force.
- At the Democratic National Convention in 1976, Mondale was nominated for vice president. He and Jimmy Carter defeated their Republican opposition, Gerald Ford and Bob Dole.
- In 1980, Carter and Mondale were defeated in their reelection bid by Republicans Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush.
- In 1984, Mondale was nominated for president at the Democratic National Convention. He chose Representative Geraldine Ferraro of New York as his running mate, the first woman ever chosen as a vice presidential candidate by a major U.S. party. Mondale and Ferraro were defeated by Reagan and Bush in the election.
- From 1993 to 1996, Mondale was the United States ambassador to Japan under Bill Clinton.
- In 2002, he ran for Senate in Minnesota to replace Democratic Senator Paul Wellstone after his death in a plane crash. He was beaten by Republican Norm Coleman.
