The United States Senate, often called the U.S. Senate or simply the Senate, is a deliberative legislative chamber of 100 senators, two from each state, elected in statewide elections for six-year terms by popular vote. Named after the ancient Roman Senate, the U.S. Senate is the upper house of the Congress, smaller than the U.S. House of Representatives, which has 435 members. Together, they compose the legislative branch of the United States government. The Senate chamber is located in the north wing of the U. S. Capitol building, in Washington, D.C.
