Sovereignty movement

A secession, separatist or sovereignty movement is one that seeks to give a local authority more power and a remote authority less power.

They are extremely common everywhere in the world. In the English speaking world they have been rare simply because the British Empire was relatively strong and the United States was also military powerful and expanding throughout the 20th century. However, as this world power recedes or comes into doubt, it seems likely that sovereignty movements will again become common as in other countries.
