Sovereignty movement

A secession, separatist or sovereignty movement is one that seeks to give a local authority more power and a remote authority less power.

They are extremely common everywhere in the world. In the English speaking world they have been rare simply because the British Empire was relatively strong and the United States was also military powerful and expanding throughout the 20th century. However, as this world power recedes or comes into doubt, it seems likely that sovereignty movements will again become common as in other countries.

Current notable sovereignty movements include:

• Kurdistan seeking to escape Iraq and possibly reunite Kurds in Syria and (far more important and controversial) in Turkey.
• Tibet seeking escape from China and restoral of its status as an independent state
• Taiwan seeking to redefine itself as an independent state as opposed to a breakaway part of China
• Hong Kong attempting to assert its unique status and right to continue to use British-derived law, protection for which it was guaranteed until 2047 by China
• Scotland seeking autonomy from the United Kingdom
• Wales seeking autonomy from the United Kingdom
• Northern Ireland seeking autonomy from the United Kingdom
• Quebec seeking autonomy from Canada
• Newfoundland seeking autonomy from Canada
• Hawaii seeking autonomy from the USA and restoral of its status as an independent state (see Hawaiian sovereignty movement).
• Alaska seeking autonomy from the USA
• California seeking autonomy from the USA
• Corsican separatists seeking to split from France
• Euskadi Basque separatists seeking to split from Spain and France
• Jura separatists seeking to split from France
