Vermont is the 14th state of the Union, becoming a state in 1791. In general, the Vermont voters are more independent and more attuned to environmental issues than the average U.S. voter. The only independent members of Congress are from Vermont.

From the 1850s through the 1980s, Vermont has voted for a Republican president. However, in 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004 Vermont voted Democratic. The identification of the state by many in the national Republican Party with left-wing views has alienated many former Republicans, and Vermont seems to now be almost as safely Democrat as it was once safely Republican.

Democrat, Patrick Leahy was first voted to the U.S. Senate in 1974. Leahy has been reelected since and is a leading member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Vermont's junior senator, Bernie Sanders was first elected to the Senate in 2006. Sanders' predecessor, James Jeffords' decision in 2001 to leave the Republican party and become an independent tipped the Senate balance in favor of the Democrats, until Republicans regained control in November 2002. Sanders, an avowed socialist, was replaced by Democrat Peter Welch in 2006.

In Spring 2000, after a State Supreme Court decision, Vermont and then-governor Howard Dean enacted the U.S.'s first civil union law.

To date, 18 Vermonters have been killed in the War in Iraq.
