Background
Leonard Boswell was born in Harrison County, Mo. on January 10, 1934. He graduated from Lamoni High School in Lamoni, Iowa, in 1952.
In 1956, Boswell was drafted into the United States Army as a private. He would spend twenty years serving his country in the Army, eventually rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
He was elected to the Iowa State Senate in 1984, where he served until 1996, the last 4 years as president of the Senate, when he was elected to Congress. In 1994 he was the Democratic nominee for Lt. Governor.
