Secretary of Homeland Security: Tom Ridge
The Department's "three primary missions: Prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, reduce America's vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the damage from potential attacks and natural disasters." (dhs.gov) Created in 2002 by the Congress with the passage of the National Strategy for Homeland Security and the Homeland Security Act of 2002, the Department of State is the junior executive Department of the U.S. Government.
The Department of Homeland Security is still under construction. The names, details and even existence of the following directorates and agencies may change daily. Even DHS's website (www.dhs.gov) is inconsistent about how many directorates there are and which agencies are included. However:
DHS is composed of five Directorates, each containing several agencies.
