Secretary of Homeland Security

The Secretary of Homeland Security is appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate. The Secretary carries out the President’s domestic national security policies through the Department of Homeland Security. The Department's "three primary missions: Prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, reduce America's vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the damage from potential attacks and natural disasters." (dhs.gov)

Created in 2002 by the Congress with the passage of the National Strategy for Homeland Security and the Homeland Security Act of 2002, the Department of State is the junior executive Department of the U.S. Government.
