The White House is the Executive Mansion of the United States. It is the president's official residence but also contains his office and space for his staff. The White House is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., in Washington, D.C.
The term is also used to refer to the president, his staff, or the Administration. E.g., "The White House issued a statment today...", "The legislation had support in Congress, but died after The White House made public its opposition.", etc.
During the War of 1812, British forces invaded Washington and burned the White House down. First lady Dolley Madison saved many items from the building, including the famous portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart.
In recent years, the White House has become popularized as the setting for Aaron Sorkin's TV drama "The West Wing."
