Robert Ney

Robert William Ney (born July 5, 1954) is a Republican who currently serves as a U.S. representative from the 18th District of Ohio, OH-18. Rep. Ney is the subject of a federal corruption investigation involving convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff. On August 7, 2006, Rep. Ney announced that he would not seek election to a seventh House term in 2006. On October 13, 2006 Ney pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and making false statements in relation to the Jack Abramoff Indian lobbying scandal.

Background
Ney was born in Wheeling, West Virginia and received a bachelor of sciences degree from Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio) in 1976. He then worked as a teacher and as a public safety director for the municipal government of Bellaire, Ohio. He then worked for the Ohio Office of Appalachia as program manager for health and education.
Ney served as an Ohio state representative from 1981 to 1983 and as an Ohio state senator from 1985 to 1995.
In 1994, Ney was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and began serving in 1995 (104th Congress).
Ney is Chairman of the U.S. House Committee on House Administration. As chair of that committee, he oversees operations in the Capitol complex and is sometimes known as "Mayor of Capitol Hill."
In 2001, Ney was one of three Republicans to vote against the USA Patriot Act. He joined GOP Congressmen C. L. Otter of Idaho and Ron Paul of Texas in casting dissenting votes with 62 Democrats.
