Robert 'Bud' Cramer is the representative from the Fifth District. Robert E. Cramer Jr. is based out of Huntsville, with regional offices in Decatur and Tuscumbia. He was first elected in 1990 with almost three times as many votes as Republican Albert McDonald, but that was a much different Alabama electorally, as Democrats won 5 of the 7 House seats that year, as well as a Senate seat. Cramer was able to survive from them until now (including a 1994 scare when Republican Wayne Parker almost unseated Cramer; the final margin was 88,693 to 86,923) in part by moving to the right, as his less than stellar ratings from various liberal groups can attest. He serves on the House Appropriations Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Cramer will face Gerald "Gerry" Wallace in the 2004 general election, although his seat is considered safe.
