Peter Young

Peter T. Young is the Director for Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR). Young and his staff manages Hawaii's unique natural and cultural resources. Young is Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources and the Commission on Water Resource Management. He also serves on the Board of the Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission, the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the State's Board of Agriculture.

Young was born and raised in Kaneohe on the island of Oahu. He later moved to the Big Island. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Just prior to his appointment as DLNR director he was Deputy Managing Director for the County of Hawaii. Prior to his Hawaii County position, Young was an independent appraiser, consultant, broker and property manager.

On April 24, 2007, the a state Senate Water, Land, Agriculture and Hawaiian Affairs Committee rejected the renomination of Peter Young to continue as Director of the DLNR in Gov. Lingle's second term. The vote of 15 for to 8 against with two senators absent. Senate Democrats said Young was a weak leader who lacked accountability and management skills. However, Young had, over the years gained the support of many environmental and native hawaiian groups.
