Mike Rogers is the Republican Representative from the Eighth District of Michigan, considered to be the state's only competitive House district. He was first elected to Congress in 2000. He is not related to Alabama representative Mike D. Rogers.
Rogers was in the United States Army from 1985-1989, and he worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1989-1994. He was a member of the Michigan state senate from 1995-2000.
Rogers supports the War in Iraq, voting consistently with the Bush administration on Iraq policy:
- He voted to authorize force against Iraq in the lead up to the war.
- He voted against establishing a committee to investigate abuse of Iraqi prisoners.
- He voted against a ban on cruel and unusual punishment for detainees held by U.S. forces.
- He voted against a Democratic measure to oppose the troop “surge.”
Security cameras were destroyed and red paint was sprayed on the building housing Rogers' office in an anti-Iraq War protest on the evening of March 19 or the early morning of March 20, 2007. Rogers' Chief of Staff Andy Keiser complained about the attack and appeared to be able to read the minds of those responsible: "It is unfortunate that a few criminals decided to attack the 8th District Congressional office in the middle of the night. This is an office which provides mid-Michigan citizens with assistance regarding Social Security, Medicare, the IRS, Veterans Affairs and other federal agencies...The aggressive destruction of federal property and vandalism was a callous attempt to intimidate Congressman Rogers and his staff." Intimidation? How does he know what they were thinking?
