2009
- The Turnout Effects of Early Voting, Election Day Registration, and Same Day Registration in the 2008 Presidential Election by Barry C. Burden, David T. Canon, Kenneth R. Mayer, and Donald P. Moynihan, University of Wisconsin-Madison (September 17, 2009). Distinguishes between early voting where registration must have taken place earlier, election-day registration (EDR), where a voter can both register and vote on election day, and same-day registration (SDR), where a voter can both register and vote at the same time at a point prior to or on election day. Contrary to popular wisdom, they find that early voting does not have a positive effect on turnout, and may even have a negative effect, due to the fact that the registration deadline is unchanged and that the impetus to vote is diffused due to the longer period of time available. However, SDR would encourage turnout.
