Background

John C. McColgan is the Democratic Party candiate runnig for the Oregon Congressional representative to the District 2 of the House of Representatives.

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and received a BA with Honors in Government and Philosophy at the College of William and Mary in 1977. He met his wife, Pepper, who a native of Seattle, in 1978 when both were serving as VISTA Volunteers in Oklahoma. In VISTA, which stands for Volunteers in Service to America, they both worked with low-income people, she as a job developer, and he as a carpenter. In 1979, they moved to Southern Oregon, got married, and began raising a family in the small town of Talent. They have four children, the youngest of whom is now 18.

Since 1980, McColgan's main vocation is General Contractor. He own a small business called Nature & Grace Incorporated, which does Residential Construction, Home Additions, and Remodeling. He serves as President of the company, on-site General Contractor, and Lead Carpenter. When not doing construction, he have also worked as a teacher. In 1997, he completed the Fifth Year Elementary Education Program at Southern Oregon University, and during the 1997-98 school year, taught First Grade at Central Point Elementary School.

As a parent and community volunteer, McColgan served for years in many roles, from Little League coach to Cubmaster to religious education teacher at his parish church. Has has also been active in local and national groups that promote the causes of non-violence and social justice, such as Peace House, and Parenting for Peace and Justice. McColgan served as a Democratic Precinct Person, as a volunteer County Coordinator for the Dukakis Presidential Campaign, and as Oregon's Platform Committee Representative to the Democratic National Convention in 1988.

Two years ago, in 2002, McColgan ran in the Democratic Primary for the same office he is currently running for.
