Hawaii State Senate

The Hawaii State Senate is the twenty-five member, upper chamber of the Hawaii State Legislature. It is led by the President of the Senate elected from the membership of the majority political party. Senators are elected to four-year terms and are not subject to term limits. See Hawaii State Legislature article for links to members of past and present legislatures.

In 2000, Hawaii residents voted their approval of reapportionment of districts of the Hawaii State Legislature.

According to the Reapportionment Commission:

"ELECTION OF SENATORS AFTER REAPPORTIONMENT - Section 7
The term of office of all Senators shall end at the general election at which an apportionment plan becomes effective. The number of Senators in a senatorial district and the staggered terms of Senators in each district shall be recomputed be the Reapportionment Commission.

STAGGERED TERMS FOR THE SENATE - Section 8

The State Constitution requires the Reapportionment Commission, as part of the reapportionment plan, to assign two-year terms to twelve senate seats to be filled in the election immediately following adoption of the reapportionment plan, and to assign four year terms to the remaining thirteen senate seats. The Commission is to assign the two-year terms to senate seats in a way such that the resident population of each senate district has no more than two regular senate elections for a particular senate seat within the six-year period beginning in the even numbered year prior to the reapportionment year.

The 2001 Reapportionment Commission determined the percentage of population in each new senate district that had a senate election in the year 2000 and identified the twelve new senate district seats with the smallest percentage of population that had a Senate election in the year 2000. Those twelve new senate districts were designated by the Commission to have two-year terms in the 2002 Election.
Pursuant to Article IV, Sections 7 and 8, Hawaii State Constitution, the Reapportionment Commission determined that the twelve senate district seats that will have two-year Senate terms in the 2002 Election are:

Hawaii: Senate Districts 1 and 3
Maui: Senate Districts 5 and 6
Kauai: Senate District 7
Oahu: Senate Districts 12, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, and 23.</p>

The thirteen remaining district seats that will have four-year Senate terms in the 2002 Election are:

Hawaii: Senate District 2
Maui: Senate District 4
Kauai: None
Oahu: Senate Districts 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20, 24, and 25."

The lower chamber is the Hawaii State House of Representatives.
