William "Bill" Grawn Milliken was a former Republican Governor of Michigan; an influential and well-respected moderate, noted for his leadership during turbulent times in Michigan--the OPEC crisis of the seventies, the troubles of domestic auto makers, and the contamination of food supply in the state with a toxic chemical. Milliken was elected lieutenant governor in 1964, was re-elected in 1966, and became governor in 1969 upon the resignation of Gov. George Romney to become HUD secretary. He won an election in his own right in 1970, and was re-elected in 1974 and 1978. He served for fourteen years, from 1969 to 1983.

In the 2004 election, Milliken announced that he was supporting John Kerry and criticized the Republican party for yielding too much to the right wing.
