Ann Richards

From dKosopedia

Ann Richards was the Governor of Texas from 1991-1994. She first came to national attention during the 1988 Democratic national convention, when she said of George H.W. Bush, "Poor George, he can't help it...He was born with a silver foot in his mouth."

Richards won her first election, to the Travis County Commission, in 1976, then she was elected State Treasurer in 1982. At the time, she was the first woman elected to statewide office in more than 50 years. She won the Governor's race in 1990, succeeding Bill Clements.

Ann Richards was born on September 1, 1933, in Lakeview, Texas, and she graduated from Baylor University where she held a debate scholarship. She worked as a junior high school teacher before entering politics. She and her husband David had four children. (She was divorced in the 1970s.) She passed away on September 13, 2006, from esophageal cancer.
