Ann Coulter is a controversial television personality known for her virulent attacks on liberal voters and Democratic politicians. Coulter clawed her way to national attention during the Whitewater and Monica Lewinsky scandals of the Clinton administration, during which she served as one of Richard Scaife's "elves" — political minions employed to spread negative information about Bill Clinton in the media.
Coulter thrives on outrage. Questioned by Fox News' Colmes about her comments at the American Conservative Union smearing John Edwards as gay, Coulter responded: "[T]his is the same thing we go through every six months. I say something, the same people become hysterical, and that’s the end of it. I mean I think the lesson young right-wingers ought to draw from this is: it’s really not that scary to attack liberals. This is my 17th allegedly career-ending moment."

Biography
Ms. Coulter was raised in Connecticut and is a graduate of Cornell University and the University of Michigan Law School. She clerked for Pasco Bowman II of the United States Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals and practiced law for a private firm in New York City. Later she handled crime and immigration issues for the office of Michigan Senator Spencer Abraham and was employed as a litigator for the Center For Individual Rights in Washington, DC.
In 2008 she had her jaw wired shut. [1]

Criticism
Coulter sometimes goes too far for even the crass standards of today's political climate -- Sen. Jack Reed berated her on the Senate floor for her malicious distortion of Max Cleland's war injuries. She was also fired by the ultra-right National Review magazine after a particularly vile rant saying the 9/11 climate justified killing Arab civilians. More than one Republican may sometimes be heard saying, "nobody creates more liberals than Ann Coulter," and the sustained success of anti-Republican, anti-Bush, and anti-Coulter tomes such as Al Franken's Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them in 2003 and 2004 may be evidence. She is of course often accused of not meaning what she says, and will plead that she's stating her opinion "in a lighthearted way" when caught wrong on the facts.
She is quite skilled at making a very large false claim and then backtracking to a much smaller claim - a skill common among lawyers and propagandists. As a typical example, on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Fifth Estate news investigative show, Coulter mentioned that Canada had sent troops to Vietnam. The interviewer claimed that "Canada did not send troops to Vietnam." Coulter disputed him, including the question "Indochina?" The interviewer continued to claim that Coulter was wrong, and his claim has been widely repeated since. The interviewer's claim was actually false. Canada sent troops to French Indochina on August 7, 1954, at the time of the partition of Vietnam. Serving as part of the International Control Commission, Canadian troops remained in Indochina/Vietnam for almost nineteen years, departing on July 31, 1973. Canada awards a military medal specifically for service with this group. 1,550 Canadian troops have received it.
