- June 17, 1789: Deputies of the Third Estate vote to establish themselves as the National Assembly and demand a French Constitution.
- The French National Assembly was created as a parliamentary body to move control of issues, such as taxation, from the king to the citizenry. This is the origin of "left and right wing" as political ideological space designations.
- British captain William Bigh sails through the Fijian islands but does not stop because he is chased by war canoes.
