Timeline cats and cats in general

I saw 1917. If you want to go that way with cats, then do so. BartFraden created just about all of these, but has steadfastly declined to categorize them. I started (see Category:Timelines); here, instead of clogging up the category page (see Special Pages), I opted to do it by century.

As for creating new categories, you need to EDIT and then SAVE them to make them real. They will be redlinked at the bottom of the saved page. Click on the redlinked cat, and then assign a supercat to it. For "1917" this would be "Timelines".--Allamakee Democrat 10:04, 24 June 2006 (PDT)

  1. I'm looking at the category Quotes, specifically Quotes/George Bernard Shaw. If you click at the bottom on red-linked Categories:Quotes, this will carry you to the category page. You will see they are all alphabetized under Q. Cats like this should be piped in order to alphabetize them: [[Category:Quotes|Shaw, George Bernard]]

  1. Categories work even if they have not been officially "saved"; the fact that "Quotes" is red linked indicates it has not been saved. To save it, just go there and save it. You may also wish to assign it to a supercat, perhaps "People", for lack of a better. You can also add some text in the modifiable area to explain the category; other wikipedias often use this space to list missing articles (which avoids junking up the TOC will articles that will eventually be deleted).

Yeah, well, I'm in the camp that they shouldn't have their own articles, or if they are they should be in the form George Bernard Shaw/Quotes, rather than the other way around. Category Progress

So, I'm going through the Oldest Pages, and putting categories on everything I can. I've found quite a few that were created with the & symbol, which makes them unreachable. And a few like Al Franken and Sinclair Broadcast Group that need categories but are protected.

I just finished going through everything up to December, 2004. I'll keep working on it.

Multiple Pipes

It is just like cross indexing. Think from the end user's perspective - where might they look for something? Generally there is one or more possibilitites. Then also think about how sub-categories are used in filing something and try to organize accordingly, so a person doesn't have to look through too many top level records to find what they want. --SarahLee 11:57, 4 July 2006 (PDT)

Some wikiuniverse gossip. There has been the big New Yorker article about WP, but elsewhere we are told there is the big upcoming article in the Atlantic.

In the meantime, the full assault on JW's creaky universe is in full swing. JB would seem to be a full participant in the C of $ conspiracy, or at least his most trusted stewards are. Ghastly news. Bad page naming

Your work on categories is appreciated but it's inter-page internal links that do most of the work of organizing on a wiki, and that's made much more difficult and chaotic by bad capitalization in page names. I must ask you to do something about your terrible page naming habits. When you edit a page, it's your obligation to correct its name and redirect the bad name to the correct name. Thank you at least for not making good names into bad ones, but you must acquire the habit of making bad names into good ones as you do other edits.

If I am reading the log correctly, then the pages you edit are among the worst offenders. It seems that every time you choose a name you put incorrect capitalization in it, making it impossible to use the title properly in a sentence. These habits are absolutely banned on most useful wikis like Wikipedia, and for very good reason. See dKosopedia:naming for more on this critical question of naming conventions.

Bad names do more than make the obvious links not work, they become hard to read.For instance, names like "Teaching Evolution", "Dictators and Non-Democratic Governments" make it impossible to tell the difference between groups with proper names, and generic concepts. In English, generic concepts like the false consensus effect or claims like the assertion that balanced reporting at any cost spreads disinformation or phenomena like politically motivated limits on trial court jurisdiction are never capitalized. Notice that the last link won't link, as it should. Case sensitivity is built into English and rightfully built in to mediawiki as well. Generic/specific problems arise like Ohio Fraud - just which of the several thousand cases of fraud in Ohio are you referring to here? If you mean alleged Ohio electoral fraud, 2004 then say so.

Request to educate

Chad, would you please inform User:Centerfielder and User:SarahLee that they cannot reasonably expect to insert obvious spelling errors and propagate multiple versions of page name prefixes or namespaces and expect to have those edits stand? Trying to be bold around here is going to cause a lot of friction with people like them thinking they own pages, and requiring "discussion" before wikifying first person and fixing near-vandalism like inserting their own bad spelling back into articles and using inconsistent names. -- egmod

None of those rare people who actually pound pages into linkable shape are going to edit here long if what's been going on at tag:editor portal continues. I think it's up to you to tell them that they're out of line. Thx. I guess I decided it was more suited to a Daily Kos diary - so I made one... I had never had one before. (And boy, that was certainly an experience for a first diary - I didn't know DKOS was so anti-Hillary.) I'm going to just sporadically work on her issues page now (I have tons of facts I never uploaded), and do any editorializing on DKOS. I was perpetually afraid that someone would come along and tell me off for including my ramblings in dKospedia! :p

Chad, just got back into town. I have no objection to changing Frameshop to Frametank or something else. pyrrho is the one who started this area back in 1994, so you might want to drop him a line and see what he thinks. Instead of going whole hog changing every "Frameshop" word to "Frametank" maybe a good first step would be a "warning" template of some sort put at the top of every Frameshop page saying that our use of the term Frameshop is under reconsideration, and why, with a pointer to Feldman's site. Since you had an interest in Hillary pages before, I thought I would ask you... could you take a look at what is happening at the Hillary Rodham Clinton (positions) page? Am I overreacting, or are these edits acceptable? If it doesn't stop, her pages will be turned into a mish-mash of sourceless subjective criticism and boundless speculation. I have no idea what to do, or if that sort of thing is OK for this site. (I mean, what IS the progressive view on Hillary? Is there a definitive one? Hawaii articles

Hey Chad, thanks for taking an interest in anything Hawaii related! Please feel free to edit anything you like. As you know, anyone can edit a wiki article, but sometimes I think people are hesitant since they see jbet777 mainly attached to Hawaii articles. Gosh, please, I hope YOU don't hesitate. I'm exploring different ways of building an information foundation on Left.Wikia, currently focused on creating basic articles for each House and Senate seat that is up in 2008. I'm not working much on dK because of the lack of the sortable tables javascript class. It's incredibly useful.

Election results

Hi Chad; thanks for the input. What I was planning to focus on in the near future is replicating the same template for each of the states, and then start applying it to counties (just the biggest ones... I doubt I'll have time to get to all 3000 of them). I assume when you're talking about your project, you're talking about the project involving precinct-level data and Google maps? (I saw the sample at the Washington Dems website, and it looked great; congratulations on winning the grant for it, or whatever you won.) Anyway, if you feel like there are going to be any redundancies between what I'm doing and what you're doing, please feel free let me know and we can discuss, or make some changes yourself if you think my tables would be improved by adding the sortability function or anything else that makes them more linkable. Election template

Hi Chad; thanks for imposing more of a sense of order on the various election results pages via the new templates. I'm not quite done with the states, but I wasn't planning to stop there, and I've created a Los Angeles County, California election results page. I'm not sure how you want to work county-specific pages into the new system, but the first one is out there now, so just make whatever modifications you see fit and I'll format future county-specific pages to meet your specifications. (In fact, feel free to rename it if you can think of a better system. Even though it's cumbersome, I added the state name because a lot of county names appear in multiple states, and I don't want any confusion, between, say, Orange County, CA and Orange County, FL.) I've built a link from the California election results page to the Los Angeles County election results page, but that can be removed if you want a template-based system instead. (I see your new state template has links for each county, but I didn't want to call my page just Los Angeles County because I don't want to foreclose anyone from writing a page about the actual county government there. Yeah, I was going to work my way downwards based on population, hence starting out with Los Angeles County. I'm sure I'll go well past 20, but I'm not on any sort of timetable. I'd kind of rather work with congressional districts rather than counties, but the downticket data is in the public domain for counties, and not for CDs. Hi Chad- I'm responding to your call for suggestions for other things to add to the "US election results" template. One other thing I'd like to accomplish is more sortable tables allowing for state-by-state comparisons within a particular year, like you (I assume it was you, maybe it was someone else) did in "U.S. presidential election, 2004." I'd like to do them for presidential, gubernatorial, and senatorial elections (at least for the even-numbered years; I doubt anyone wants to see a table that has nothing but New Jersey and Virginia on it) for the 00s and 90s. I started today with "2006 gubernatorial election results," which you can integrate to the template (and/or re-name) as you see fit. I was hesitant to add this table to "U.S. gubernatorial elections, 2006" as this is a huge, messy page with both pre-election and post-election information. My suggestion would be to take "U.S. presidential election, 2004" and re-name it "2004 presidential election results" to fit this pattern and open up "U.S. presidential election, 2004" for a more narrative-type discussion of the 2004 prez race, a la "U.S. senatorial election, 2006." But I'll stick with whatever you think the best nomenclature would be. Crisitunity 16:10, 15 November 2007 (PDT).

I think sticking close to the Wikipedia names is important. We've shrunk "United States" down to "U.S.", which is find, but the rest should be left as parallels. Let me see what you're working on for the Gov races in '06. Maybe we can incorporate it into the existing pages without it taking up so much room.
I think we can use the summary table as the main page, and move the detail to individual state pages. Work, but worth it I think.
I do notice that you're using raw html for the tables, which takes up a lot of room in the source pages. Wikitables don't take much effort to learn, once you get used to them. Chadlupkes 16:25, 14 November 2007 (PST)
OK, I agree, delete "2006 gubernatorial election results" and turn the table from "2006 gubernatorial election results" into "U.S. gubernatorial elections, 2006," and farm out the dead wood on "U.S. gubernatorial elections, 2006" to state-specific pages. Also, I'll try working with those new-fangled Wikitable contraptions in the future; thanks for bringing that to my attention. Why is credit given to Farden and Brudny for my work?

I wrote Winning_the_war_against_totalitarianism. 99% of the edits are by me, too. BartFarden and Brudny are given credit as the author in the space below the article. Bart wrote on the discussion page that is was a "rant," and that's been his major contribution.

And I just looked at an article that I have never had anything to do with and found: Based on work by ..... Patrick0Moran.

This is possibly somebody's brilliant idea to give individuals credit for working for the entire group??? So what happens when somebody's boss finds his employee is given credit for an article on some wickedly liberal policy initiative -- e.g., a Ruger employee is credited with an article advocating draconian controls on handgun possession, heavy sentences for gun dealers who mess up their paperwork, and a rant against arms merchants driving civilization toward a final shoot-out? p0m 01:28, 30 July 2008 (EDT)

On the first page you mentioned, the three of you have done all the edits, and the system is trying to give credit to everyone who worked on the page. If you go to history, it's obvious that you did 99% of the work. The bottom of the page is put together by a script, not the admins. It's a black box as far as I'm concerned, and I don't think we can do much to change it since it came that way from MediaWiki. Thanks for all the work you've done!
