Texas U.S. House election, 2006

From dKosopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

This article discusses elections for Texas' seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the election schedule is complicated: the regular primary election was held on March 7th, and the general election will be on November 7th. However, five of these districts (the 15th, 21st, 23rd, 25th and 28th), have been redrawn as a result of a Supreme Court ruling, so they will have a special primary election on November 7th, followed by a Run-Off if necessary, see 2003 Texas redistricting for more details. In addition, there will be a special election in the 22nd District to fill the remaining weeks of Tom DeLay's term in the 109th Congress - this will occur simultaneously with the general election to fill that seat for the 110th Congress.

General Election for 110th Congress

  • Republicans:
    • Tom DeLay (R) - incumbent, not running. (hw) (cw) Open seat
    • Shelley Sekula-Gibbs (R) - GOP endorsed write-in candidate.
    • Tim Turner (R) - write-in candidate.
    • David Wallace (R) - write-in candidate and Sugar Land Mayor.
  • Democrat:
  • Libertarians:
    • Bob Smither (Libertarian) (cw)
  • General election results:
         Nick Lampson         (D)  76,782  52%
         Shelley Sekula Gibbs (R)  61,949  42%
         Bob Smither          (L)   9,011   6%
  • Daily Kos/ => TX-22
  • Outlook: Lampson served four terms in Congress, before losing his seat in DeLay's 2004 redistricting scheme, and now he's looking for revenge. After Jack Abramoff plead guilty to bribery charges, DeLay's support plummeted and he withdrew from the race. The Republican party used extreme arm-twisting to unite behind write-in candidate Sekula-Gibbs, but write-in candidates have never won a Texas election. Bob Smither the lone Libertarian on the ballot may recieve a boost from Republicans too lazy to write-in a vote.
