Talk:Republican Party

I believe it is initially important that a foundation is laid with a list of intelligent links to build a comprehensive database. After many of these important links are filled, perhaps it would be wise to rewrite the article.

That is to say, this should be temporary.

De facto authoritarian party

It would be worthwhile to document the growth of authoritarian sentiment as the mainstay of Republican appeal to the electorate, and to deal with the question: What is the answering position most appropriate to the Democratic party? Is it anti-authoritarianism? Libertarianism? Strategically, the problem is that people will believe a Hitler because he is so sure of himself, and they will not so readily believe anyone who has a realistic assessment of his/her own fallibility. And right now the rap is that the Democrats are the equivalent of overly permissive parents who let their kids drink, bleep, and talk back to authority figures. p0m 01:08, 16 April 2006 (PDT)

2000 Election

I rewrote the comment under presidential nominees regarding Bush from "(Lost: 2000. Bush assumed the office of President in the least legitimate national election in American history through a party-line vote in the U.S. Supreme Court: 5 Republican appointees outvoted the 4 Democratic appointees. Won:2004)" to "(Won: 2000. After losing the popular vote, Bush assumed the office of President in one of the most hotly contested national elections in American history after a 5-4 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. Won:2004)" The original was incorrect in two respects. First, Bush won the electoral college vote, which is the only vote that matters. Second, Justice Souter and Justice Stevens dissented in Bush v. Gore even though Souter was appointed by President George H.W. Bush and Stevens by President Ford. Although a minor point, I also removed "least legitimate" as while it is certainly in the running for the title, the election of 1824, where John Quincy Adams bought Henry Clay's support in the House by offering to appoint him secretary of state, is the reigning champion.
