The Summer of Love is a reference to the summer of 1967, in particular to events in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, when thousands of young people traveled to San Francisco from all over the world and the counterculture movement came into public awareness. In the minds of many, the Summer of Love began with the Human Be-In at Golden Gate Park on January 14, 1967. Thousands gathered there to promote peace, happiness, and love. Tens of thousands more traveled to San Francisco after hearing the much publicized declaration that summer 1967 would be the "Summer of Love." The Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco quickly became home to free spirits who had came to celebrate the counterculture with music, poetry, theatre and speech.
