Salt Pit

The "Salt Pit" is the former codename and now common name for an isolated clandestine CIA prison and interrogation/torture site in Afghanistan. Located north of the Afghani capital city Kabul, it was originally contructed by a German firm as a brick factory. Locals often call it Hecht Hochtief as a consequence. The Salt Pit is beleived to be the location of the "Dark Prison."

Prisoners

Among the most well known prisoners held at the Salt Pit were German national Khalid El-Masri, who was kidnapped from by the CIA in Macedonia and flown to Afghanistan in an extraordinary rendition. Other names inlcude Binyam Mohammed, Jamil al-Banna, and Hassan bin Attash.
