Background

Russ Carnahan was born July 10, 1958. After graduating from Rolla High School in 1976, Russ attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and received a Bachelor of Science degree in public administration with an emphasis in public service in 1979. In 1983 he earned his juris doctorate degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law.

Russ and his wife Debra, a judge in the St. Louis Municipal Court, make their home in St. Louis where they are raising two sons. The family attends Lafayette Park United Methodist Church. Russ is the son of the late Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan and former First Lady and U.S. Senator, Jean Carnahan. His grandfather, A.S.J. Carnahan, was a member of Congress representing Jefferson and Ste. Genevieve County.

Russ Carnahan was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in November 2000 representing the citizens of the 59th District. The 59th District is located entirely in the Third Congressional District. Russ was re-elected with 75% of the vote in 2002. Prior to serving in the Missouri House of Representatives, Russ was in private law practice and served on the legal aide panel representing low-income clients.
