Michigan Judiciary

The Michigan supreme court, is made up of seven judges popularly elected to 8-year terms; one of the judges is elected by the court to serve a 2-year term as chief justice.

The state’s intermediate appellate court, the court of appeals, consists of 24 popularly elected judges.

The recorder’s court in Detroit, with 29 judges, and circuit courts, with a total of 200 judges, are the state’s major trial courts. Judges of these courts are popularly elected.

In addition, each county has a probate court, and many larger municipalities have district courts.
