Regional History

With a handful of exceptions in addition to those otherwise indicated above, the nations of Latin America and the Caribbean share a history of Spanish or Portuguese colonialism. The division between former Portuguese colony Brazil and the remainder of Latin American which has Spanish colonial roots can be traced to a deal brokered by the Pope in 1494 known as the Treaty of Tordesillas, which was originally designed to exclude Spain from Africa and India, and Portugal from the Far East.
