He was elected to the Senate in 2000, and reelected in 2006. Ensign served in the U.S. House from 1994-1998, when he resigned to make an unsuccessful campaign for Senate. In 2009, he confessed to an affair with a campaign staffer.[1] Senator Ensign announced on March 7, 2011 that he won't seek re-election in 2012. [2]

He was born in Roseville, California. His family moved to Nevada, where his mother re-married Michael S. Ensign, a casino/gambling executive. John is a former veterinarian. He and his wife Darlene have three children and reside in Las Vegas.

Although Ensign is staunch foe of illegal immigration, he hosted a fundraiser at the Miami home of a woman who plead guilty to passport fraud, and who is fighting deportation. (Source:, May 8, 2007)
