Background

Born in Chisholm, Minnesota on September 10, 1934.

Rep. Oberstar graduated Summa Cum Laude from the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul in 1956, with a double major degree in French and Political Science. He went on to earn a Masters degree in European Studies at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium, 1957. [1]

Following graduation, he taught English to Haitian military personnel, and French and Creole to members of the U.S. Marine Corps military advisory group in Port-au-Prince, 1959 - 1963; then served as chief staff assistant to his predecessor, Congressman John Blatnik, 1963 - 1974. [2]

Rep. Oberstar began representing Minnesota's Eighth Congressional District in Congress in 1975, and is now in his 16th term, the longest service in the U.S. House of Representatives from the state of Minnesota. [3]

He is the Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure which has jurisdiction over America's surface transportation; freight and passenger rail; the inland waterway system, including the St. Lawrence Seaway; international maritime commerce; the Economic Development Administration; the U.S. Corps of Engineers' support of the nation's water resources; and the federal clean water program.

He has been married to Jo Garlick, October 10, 1963 (D. July 1991) and is presently married to Jean Kurth. Oberstar has six children, is Roman Catholic and still lives in the town of his birth, Chisholm, Minnesota.
