Gregory W. Meeks is a Democratic congressman who represents the 6th district of New York. He was first elected to Congress in a 1998 special election.

Meeks and his wife Simone-Marie have three children.

Background

Meeks was raised in East Harlem's public housing, and attended New York City public schools before attending Adelphi University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in Political Science. In 1978, he received his Juris Doctorate from Howard University School of Law. After law school, he joined the Queens County District Attorney's Office as Assistant District Attorney. He was then promoted to the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor for the City of

New York. In 1984, he left this position to join the State Investigation Commission. His responsibilities included direct investigations of public officials, state employees and organized crime. He was then appointed Judge of New York State Worker's Compensation. He held this position until 1992 when he was elected to the New York State Assembly, where he served for five years.
