Deism

Deism is the belief that a creator God established the universe and is no longer active in the world in an obvious way. This belief was popular around the time of the American Revolutionary War and was held by a few of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Some Freemasons of this era were deists.

Today, Atheism and Agnosticism largely fill the place in the religious spectrum once occupied by deists, because the evolution and modern cosmology has made the clockwork God envisioned by the Deists, less important to a philosophically sound world view. However, many people who describe themselves as Agnostics, a term commonly used to refer to those who don't know if God exists or believe this to be unknowable, reject most existing religions and instead feel that they do not know or are incapable of knowing, whether the atheistic or deistic worldview is correct.
