The Greek roots of the term Catholic are kata or "according to" and holos or "the whole". Catholic is also taken to mean "universal." From the beginning of the second century AD, the term Catholic is used in reference to the Church. At that time, or shortly thereafter, it was used to refer to a single, visible communion, separate from others. As such, Catholic cannot properly be used to describe a mere denomination. Today, the Roman Catholic Church is the largest Christian denomination in the world.

Protestantism started when Martin Luther left the Catholic Church.
