Battleground states

Competitive states that could go to either party in a presidential general election. In 2004, 17 states are generally considered battleground territory:

Zogby International has used a slightly different definition of "battleground states", which excludes Arizona and Maine from the list but adds Tennessee (11) (Bush). As of August 2004, Zogby has added four more states -- Arizona, Colorado (9) (Bush), North Carolina (15) (Bush), and Virginia (13) (Bush) -- bringing its total to 20 battleground states.
