Background

Representative Barney Frank was born in Bayonne, Hudson County, N.J. on March 31, 1940. He received an B.A. from Harvard University in 1962 and continued graduate work in political science and teaching fellow in government at Harvard University until 1972. Rep. Frank received his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1977.[1]

First elected to the 4th district of Massachusetts in 1980, Barney Frank is one of the most outspoken Democrats in the House of Representatives.

Rep. Frank, along with former Massachusetts Congressman Gerry Studds, were the first openly gay members of Congress (Studds came out in 1984, Frank in 1987.) Frank's liberal politics and openness about his sexual orientation have made him a lightning rod for extremists — Dick Armey called him "Barney Fag" in a 1995 interview. But Frank is a very proud liberal and a leading voice on progressive issues, although pragmatic on occasion — such as the February 2004 same-gender marriages performed in San Francisco.

Committees

Franks is the Chairman of the House Committee on Financial Services.
