Arizona's 5th Congressional District encompasses Scottsdale, Tempe, Fountain Hills, Ahwatukee, Rio Verde, and parts of Mesa, Phoenix and Chandler. Republican J.D. Hayworth, first elected to Congress in 1994, served six two-year terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. Hayworth was defeated in the 2006 elections by Harry Mitchell (D).
