The 1st Congressional District of Arizona is enormous and rural, and includes Casa Grande, Florence, Payson, Prescott, Flagstaff and the Navajo Nation. The district is experiencing both the general trend across the West of party dealignment, with the percentages of voters claiming to be independents now at 23%, and a large influx of migrants from California and the Midwest. Republican Rick Renzi is the incumbent. He defeated his Democratic challenger, Ellen Simon.
