  • December: After British parliament passes a new set of "Gagging Acts" and pamphleteer William Hone is put on trial three times in three days. A conservative Loyalist mob attacks the home of Thomas Hardy for to nights running. Hardy's wife, who is six months pregnant, is badly bruised attempting to flee the mob on the night of the first attack.
