Zachary Taylor, a Whig, was the 12th President of the United States from 1849-1850. He was a slaveholder but worked to admit California to the United States as a free state. He was a proponent of the spoils system. He accomplished little in office because he died after sixteen months in office from an illness.
His Vice President, Millard Fillmore followed him with an equally unexceptional remainder of Taylor's term after making attempts to compromise on the issue of slavery which satisfied no one.
The main impact of the two men in history was to show that the Whig party had little to offer voters, a conclusion that led to the creation of the Republican Party.
