The United States Naval Academy is the primary U.S. government institution for producing military officers for the naval service (Navy and Marine Corps). It is located in Annapolis, Maryland. It was founded in 1845.
The official mission is "to develop midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to provide graduates who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have the potential for future development in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government."
Some graduates that have achieved national prominence include: Jimmy Carter, Ross Perot, John McCain, Oliver North, James Stockdale, John Poindexter, James H. Webb and John O'Neill.
