Tom Latham (R - Alexander) was born on July 14, 1948 in Hampton, IA. He attended Iowa State University from 1967 to 1970. Along with his two brothers, he owns Latham Seeds, a seed company. He was first elected to Congress in 1994. He currently represents Iowa's Fourth Congressional District.
He has gained a reputation as a big-government, big-spending, pork-loving, deficit-spender. The New York Times, on May 25, 2006, reports that Arizona Republican Congressman Jeff Flake criticized him for a $229,000 earmark for dairy education, forcing Latham to own-up to this beefy bit of pork. source As a member of the House appropriations committee, he has to be seen as being personally responsible for the size of the federal deficit.
Latham is a cigarette smoker, as this article indicates.
