Legislative Career

South Dakota house of representatives 1978-1982, state senate 1983-1986 US House of Representatives 1987-1996 US Senate 1997- Present

After marrying his college sweetheart, Barbara, and starting a successful law practice, Tim Johnson ran for the South Dakota house of representatives in 1978. He won, and has kept on winning ever since. After 4 years in the house, Tim was elected to the state senate, where he served 2 terms. In 1986, he set his sights on Washington and won the race for the state's lone US House seat (vacated by Tom Daschle, who was successfully running for the Senate) with 60% of the vote. He got more bills passed in his first term than any of the other 50 freshmen elected that year. After serving 5 terms, Tim ran for the Senate, and managed to defeat an incumbent Republican to become South Dakota's junior senator.

In 2002, Johnson was embroiled in an extremely vicious reelection campaign. Many pegged him for defeat and considered him nothing more than Daschle's sidekick. His opponent John Thune's campaign falsely accused him of voter fraud and - in spite of Johnson having a son serving in Afghanistan - ran vicious attack ads comparing him to Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein (the same ads which defeated Sen. Max Cleland). Thanks to votes from Indian counties, Johnson surprised many by squeaking out a win by 524 votes. Since that election, the mild-mannered and pleasant senator has become much less tolerable of the brutality of the Republican Party, as shown when he condemned the "Taliban wing" of the party in a May 2004 campaign appearance.

He has a son serving in Iraq.

In December 2006, Johnson was hospitalized for intracerebral bleeding. (Source: Update on Sen. Johnson) On September 5, 2007, Johnson returned to the Senate. Johnson has said that he will run for reelection in 2009.
