Edward M. Kennedy ('Edward Moore Kennedy), or Ted Kennedy is the senior United States Senator from Massachusetts. He first assumed the position through appointment at the age 30 in 1962. The most prominent living member of the Kennedy family, he is the brother of assassinated President John F. Kennedy and former U.S. Attorney General and Senator Robert F. Kennedy (who also died by assassination).
He served as Democratic Majority Whip from 1969 to 1971, and unsuccessfully challenged President Jimmy Carter for the Democratic nomination in 1980. Since then, he has been the icon of liberalism in the Senate, and a favorite target of conservative-leaning groups. In the past thirty years, Kennedy has only faced a serious re-election fight in 1994, against now-Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney. Even then, he won the election by more than 15 points.
Now 73, Kennedy shows no sign of wanting to retire, and was easily re-elected in 2006. If he completes this term, he will have continuously served fifty years as a US Senator, something no one else has managed to do to date (even Strom Thurmond could not claim this). Should Senator Robert Byrd leave the Senate, Senator Kennedy will become the Dean of the Senate.
An eight-seat Cessna Citation 550 carrying Kennedy was hit by lightening on May 15, 2006 as he flew from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, where he given a commencement address, to Cape Cod, were he has a home. The plane lost all electrical power, including communications, and the pilot had to fly the plane manually.
