Swing state

From dKosopedia

Some states, such as Massachusetts and Hawaii, are heavily Democratic. Other states, such as Alabama or Idaho, are heavily Republican. A swing state is any state that could vote either way. Usage is usually restricted to the presidential election.

Swing states in 2004 include Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, and about a dozen others. See battleground states for a list.
