Socialist Party

From dKosopedia

The current Socialist Party USA traces its origins to the original Socialist Party of America, which was created at a unity convention in Indianapolis in 1901 when Eugene V. Debs’ Social Democratic Party merged with the “Kangaroo” wing of the older (and still active – see link below) Socialist Labor Party. Before World War I the Socialist Party elected two Members of Congress and over 70 mayors. At its peak in 1912 the party had over 100,000 members and attracted 6% of the popular vote for its presidential candidate, Debs.

Following the October Revolution in Russia and the formation of the Bolshevik-directed Third Communist International in 1919, there was a major split as Moscow-aligned members broke away to form the Communist Party. During the first red scare in 1920 the SPA's elected representative was not allowed into the House of Representatives. There was a resurgence in the party’s fortunes in the early 1930s with the onset of the Great Depression, but Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal attracted many leftists to the Democratic Party, and ever since there has been a tendency for socialists to gravitate toward the left wing of the Democrats.

The current Socialist Party USA calls for workers and consumers to control the means of production and distribution through democratically controlled public agencies, cooperatives, and other collective groups.
