The Troll Wars

It seems to me that we're going too far in trying to maintain the status quo. I recently tried to add a comment made earlier by Lamgal to this page and the change was undone. While I appreciate that we have a problem with fighting trolls, we also need to take care to preserve the work that we are doing.

And now, on with the discussion

October 13, 2004 3:43 EST Response from INGLES Markets which adevertises on Sinclair owned station WLOS in Asheville NC:

INGLES MARKETS

(advertiser on Sinclair station WLOS Asheville NC)

We do not support any political persuasion. We do monitor the types of programs we advertise on by staying away from sexually explicit programs, excessive violence, and other non - family oriented programs. But to not advertise on every program that we disagreed with on a political or moral basis, I doubt we could advertise on anything, certainly not the news. We appreciate you shopping with us. Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

OCTOBER 12, 2004 1:19 EST

WHEN E-MAILS OPPOSING THE SINCLAIR BROADCAST WERE SENT TO THE LOCAL BALTIMORE, MARYLAND AFFILIATE, THEY CONTINUED TO BE REJECTED WITH AN ERROR MESSAGE.

UPON TELEPHONING THE STATION DIRECTLY, I WAS TOLD THAT "CORPORATE" HAD SET THING UP SO THAT COMPLAINTS AND COMMENTS ON THE BROADCAST OF THE SO-CALLED DOCUMENTARY COULD ONLY BE DIRECTED TO www.newscentral.tv. WHEN I ASKED WHAT THE WEBSITE ACTUALLY REACHED - THE LOCAL EMPLOYEE OF THE FOX/SINCLAIR STATION SAID "CORPORATE".

BEST TO ALL . . . ROBIN POTTER

response from Minnesota advertiser Slumberland below

(they refused to further elaborate)

"Thank you for contacting Slumberland and sharing your concerns regarding the Sinclair Broadcast Company's decision to air the John Kerry movie "Stolen Honor". Slumberland is taking appropriate action in this matter."

Sincerely,

TELL YOUR FRIENDS! THANKS!

I've had a catastrophic success. I've e-mailed every single advertiser, and now find myself on a spam list and am being told that political messages are spam too:-(

Boycott Sinclair Local Newscasts

Can an effort be organized to boycott Sinclair Broadcasting's local news coverage? Since that is where they get a good portion of their revenues that should hurt them where it counts in their pocketbooks.

RESPONSE FROM LOWE'S

WRITE BACK AND TELL THEM THIS RESPONSE IS WHOLLY INADEQUATE!

RE:{Lowes#001-328-495} Lowes: (Investing Information)

Dear Valued Lowe’s Customer,

Thank you for your comment regarding concerns about advertising on the Sinclair Broadcasting network. Lowe’s does not advertise in political programming. We will not advertise within this political documentary, nor will the company’s local advertising appear anytime during the day this documentary airs.

As far as advertising on the Sinclair group of stations as a whole, Lowe’s advertising agency is in contact with Sinclair to learn more about the program, and our company will make a decision about future advertising at a later time.

Lowe’s has a strict company policy specifying that its advertising is not to run in controversial programming. The company advertises primarily in national, network prime-time television programs and on select local stations and cable outlets. Because Sinclair owns 62 television stations reaching 24 percent of all television households, some Lowe’s advertising may appear on those stations from time to time, but again, not in close proximity to the controversial documentary you mentioned.

We appreciate your contacting us, and hope this information addresses your concerns.\ Lowe’s Customer Care

Ringling Brothers

This is the first time ive visited this site, and was drawn here by the Sinclair issue. I have sent thank you emails to all the advertisers who have pulled their ads from Sinclair and emailed all the others in Maine (the closest area to me). The only response i have received is from Ringling Brothers, which is below:

As always, we appreciate hearing from our customers.

We want you to know that buying advertising is a way to reach our target audience and should in no way be construed as political support for anyone. Our goal is simply to get the word out that a fun, wholesome, family entertainment event is coming to your town and we hope you will attend.

May All Your Days Be Circus Days,

Ringling Bros.

How often does the website get updated?

Thanks and great work!

Rachel

Charlie's Motor Mall

Please note: After a lenthy after Hours Meeting last night. Charlie's has contacted local Sinclair afilliate and has pulled all advertising as of 10/15/2004. We wish you people the best of luck in your efforts. We now realize after many contacts from concerned citizens how important this really is.

Flatt Tire Centers Response

I am the owner and president of Flatt Tire Centers and I personally wrote the statement. I stand by my statement. Thank you for your concern. Flatt Tire Centers will continue to honor its contractual agreement with KDSM. Integrity and keeping our commitments is the cornerstone of my business. If this "program" negatively affects viewership numbers for KDSM, I will consider not renewing our contract. I keep my commitments to other businesses, period. It is ironic to me that in raising such a fuss about this program, I think your cause will increase the number of viewers for it. I repeat Flatt Tire Centers will not take any stand for or against anything, anytime for any reason. I wish you the very best in your efforts.

Jordan Flatt

---this is the email i sent, essentially the form email given here with an additional paragraph where i referenced Flatt's earlier response:

I understand you are an advertiser on Sinclair Broadcasting. Are you aware that Sinclair Broadcast Group is requiring its affiliates to preempt their regular programming just days before the November 2 election to air a film that attacks presidential candidate Senator John F. Kerry? The film, "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal," features former POWs accusing Kerry -- a decorated Navy veteran turned war protester -- of worsening their ordeal by prolonging the war.

I bring this controversy to your attention, because it is public knowledge your company advertises on Sinclair and this abuse of the public airwaves will negatively impact your company's sales. As a matter of principle, I for one will choose to purchase products from your competitors, unless you withdraw your advertising from Sinclair.

I thought your company would find it important if your customers give you an idea of what our values are and how that we desire to protect democracy in our media and fair campaign finance.

I noticed an email sent by a representative of your company that said that Flatt Tire does not have any opinion on any issues and does not support any causes. I would hope, as a corporation in the United States, you would reconsider that position. Each one of us that has a successful business owes it to the community where we work to support that community. I do hope that the representative that made that statement is not your PR person….such words would surely not be taken well in your community.

"HomelandSecurity.com" threat emails when you mass email Sinclair Advertisers? WTF?

If you have been emailing a list of Sinclair advertisers, and, like me, got a weird email claiming to be from "SpamIsIllegal@homelandsecurity.com" that said "your address is tracked, please do not spam" then please be aware of the following:

(1) I followed up, just to be sure, with 'homelandsecurity.com' No, they did not send this nor do they have any such software for someone to buy from them that sends email like this.

(2) Looking at the headers, the email appears to originate from Maquoketa Valley Electrical Cooperative in Iowa. I have emailed them and I will update if they reply.

(3) Here are the headers from the emails I received:

Your message has been Tracked and this address is now marked. Please do not send anymore Spam

Note: I have XXXed out identification about the recipient, and smutted my email address as it appears above because (1) I don't want my work address server known (2) I don't want spiders to pick up my email addy.

(4) Nobody should be deterred from sending emails because of this spoofing. Just send them one at a time. BUT-

(5) It really troubles me as to how someone knew I sent out one political mass e-mail on this, especially since the addresses were locked in a BCC. If someone could explain that to me, I'd be much obliged. --Kimberly Stone 11:05, 18 Oct 2004 (PDT)
