Shirley Franklin

Shirley Jackson was elected Mayor of Atlanta, Georgia in 2001 in her first run for elective office. She became the first black female mayor of any Southern city and the first female mayor of Atlanta. She had earlier served in the administrations of Mayors Maynard Jackson and Andrew Young. She ran for reelection in 2005 and won.
