History

San Francisco was founded in 1848, on the site of the Mexican settlement of Yerba Buena. As a result of the California Gold Rush, the population of San Francisco grew rapidly after the American conquest.

Nineteenth Century - Labor and Exclusion

By 1880, the city was populated by a diverse set of European ethnic groups, along with Mexicans and Chinese. In 1879, the Workingmen's Party of California won local elections on an anti-Chinese platform.
