Romania is a country in the Balkans bordering Ukraine to the north, Moldova to the northeast, Hungary to the west, Bulgaria to the south, and the Black Sea to the east. A member of NATO since 2004, Romania signed the European Union Accession Treaty in early 2005 and it formally joined the European Union on January 1, 2007.

Human Rights Issues

• The Swedish Migration Board granted political asylum to Romanian national Gregorian Bivolaru, a yoga instructor who leads the Movement for the Spiritual Integration into the Absolute (MISA). The Swedish Supreme Court had earlier approved the refusal of the Swedish government to extradite Bivolaru because his prosecution appeared the result of religious persecution. Some of the "facts" supporting the Romanian request for extradition were merely accusations leveled at him in the Romanian parliament. Source: Teresa Kuchler.
