Ray LaHood is the Republican representative for the 18th congressional district of Illinois. He was first elected to Congress in 1994; before that he served one term in the Illinois state house from 1982-1983.
In 2007 LaHood declared that the Democrat lead 110th Congress has been successful. "They’ve had a pretty strong quarter… They can send their members home crowing about their accomplishments, and they’ve done it in a bipartisan way, which is exactly what they promised to do."[1]
He also announced that he will retire in 2008. [2]

- Was Chief of Staff to former House Minority Leader Bob Michel (R-IL), whom he succeeded
- Kept his job on the Michel payroll (at $122,900 a year) during most of the campaign
- Returned to the Michel payroll immediately after winning election, earning some $16,000 in November and December, 1994, even while attending freshman orientation as a Member-elect. (Reference: Roll Call, 2/9/95)
- Was the only successful non-incumbent Republican candidate for the House in 1994 not to sign the Contract with America
