Portugal is a county in Southwestern Europe, bordering the Atlantic Ocean, west of Spain. Lisbon is the capital and largest city. The country's population is 10.5 million people, and they remain fairly poor, with a GDP of $17900 per person - comparable to the richer central european countries.

After decades of repressive dictatorship, a left wing military coup established a new government in 1974, and began democratic reforms.

Portugal was a founding member of NATO in 1949, and joined the European Union in 1986.

In January, 2006, Anibal Cavaco Silva succeeded Jorge Sampaio as President, becoming the country's first conservative President since 1974.
